Afghan security forces repel Taliban attack on northern districts

Xinhua, September 29, 2015 Adjust font size:

Afghan security forces repelled an attack by Taliban militants in two districts in Afghanistan's northern province of Takhar overnight, police said on Tuesday.

"Hundreds of militants attacked Ishkamish and the neighboring Yangi Qala district late on Monday. The security forces fought back the attacks, killing 15 armed militants and injuring 11 others," Khalil Haseer, provincial police spokesman, told Xinhua.

Sporadic clashes were going on in parts of the districts bordering Kunduz province on early Tuesday, he said.

On Monday, the Taliban militants captured the strategically important Kunduz city, capital of the same name Kunduz province, some 250 km north of Afghan capital of Kabul.

The militants torched several government office buildings after Afghan troops retreated towards the outskirts of the city and the Kunduz airport.

Local people in Takhar said that the Taliban militants tried to capture the attacked districts and make advance towards provincial capital Taluqan city.

The Taliban has intensified attacks over the past couple of months as the Afghan security forces assumed the full security responsibilities from NATO-led troops since Jan. 1. Endi
