Cuba seeks boxing victory in Doha

Xinhua, September 29, 2015 Adjust font size:

Cuban boxing coach Rolando Acebal said the country seeks to win back the overall title at the World Boxing Championship to be held in Doha, Qatar, from Oct. 5 to 15, local media reported on Monday.

Cuban news agency Prensa Latina quoted Acebal as saying that the goal is to win at least three gold medals so that Cuba will win back the general championship. In 2005 in Mianyang, China, Cuba won the title for the last time.

"It is difficult to return to the times when our boxers were the absolute winners. It is not easy to win three gold medals, but this is our goal," said Acebal.

"There are very powerful teams such as Azerbaijan, Russia and Kazakhstan, as well as very good boxers from other countries. I believe this will be one of the most hard-fought tournament in recent times," he added.

Acebal also said that the other goal is to increase the number of qualified boxers for Rio de Janeiro Olympics. So far only five of 10 have real possibilities.

Acebal said they want to get other three tickets in Qatar, adding he is confident that Andy Cruz (56 kg), Roniel Iglesias (69) and Erislandy Savon (91) will get them. Endi
