European Commission adopts first Balkan-Mediterranean cooperation program

The European Commission here on Monday announced that the first EU Transnational Cooperation for the Balkan-Mediterranean area had been adopted to boost the competitiveness of the regional economy.

According to a Commission press release, the "Balkan-Mediterranean" program, covering the Balkan Peninsula and the Eastern Mediterranean Sea, was adopted on Friday, bringing together three EU countries of Greece, Bulgaria and Cyprus, and two candidate countries of Albania and Macedonia.

Over 28 million euros from the European Regional Development Fund and more than 5 million euros from the Instrument for Pre-accession Assistance will be allocated to the program. With national co-financing included, the total budget of the program amounts to almost 40 million euros.

The program focuses on supporting entrepreneurship and innovation and on preserving the region's natural and cultural heritage. Endit
