Cubans lead Latin American, Caribbean group in Qatar

Cuban world champions Lazaro Alvarez and Julio Cesar La Cruz will feature in the 2015 Doha World Championship, local daily Prensa Latina said on Friday.

Alvarez, in the 60kg category and La Cruz, 81kg, will spearhead 43 boxers from Latin America and the Caribbean to the Oct. 5-15 event which drew a total of 260 athletes around the world.

The tournament will grant 23 tickets to Rio de Janeiro 2016 Olympic Games.

Cuba is a boxing international power and at least one Cuban boxer will take part in each of the 10 categories. Also, Cuban Yasniel Toledo, runner up in light welterweight in the last world championship, will participate.

Brazilian Robson Donato, leader of lightweight world ranking, is one of the great rivals of Alvarez in his path to keep the world title.

Venezuelan Gabriel Maestre, Argentine Yamil Peralta and Cuban Yosvani Veitia (flyweight), will return to the world championships after they won bronze medal in 2013.

Mexicans Joselito Velazquez, Lindolfo Delgado, Marvin Cabrera, Misael Rodriguez and Edgar Rodriguez will also participate in Doha. Endit
