Reims up to third with home win over Lille

Xinhua, September 26, 2015 Adjust font size:

David N'gog made amends for missing a penalty by scoring the winner at home to help Reims beat Lille 1-0 and move up to third place in the French Ligue 1 provisionally on Friday.

The former Liverpool striker took on the spot after Djibril Sidibe's foul on Nicolas de Preville in the area earned the hosts a penalty kick on 19 minutes, but his effort was denied by Mike Maignan.

N'Gog, however, nodded home Frederic Bulot's cross from close range to break the deadlock after 56 minutes at Stade Auguste-Delaune II.

Lille's best chance came in the opening minutes when Eric Bautheac's volley from the edge of the area hitting the post and staying out.

With the victory, Reims restored their unbeaten record at home so far this season and moved within two points of leaders Paris Saint-Germain before the defending champions travel to Nantes on Saturday.

Saint-Etienne, who host Nice on Sunday, were on the second place, while Lyon and Rennes trailing Reims ahead of their respective eighth round matches.

Lille, meanwhile, remain in 13th place in the standings, having scored just two goals in seven fixtures of the local league this season. Enditem
