Austria passes law to establish asylum quarters where quotas not met

Xinhua, September 26, 2015 Adjust font size:

The Austrian National Council on Friday passed a law that will allow it to establish quarters for refugees in states and municipalities that do not fulfil given quotas.

The parliament cleared the two-thirds majority needed to pass the changes to the constitution that will come into effect on Oct. 1.

The law, which will last until the end of 2018, will allow the Ministry of the Interior to establish asylum quarters essentially with force, and without being able to be challenged by various laws.

A limit in the refugee numbers was set to 1.5 percent of the population of any given community but that percentage could be raised in the event that refugee flows make it necessary.

The far-right Freedom Party had put forth a motion in objection of enactment of the law by the National Council, though this did not achieve a majority vote. Endit
