2nd LD Writethru: U.S. House Speaker Boehner to resign from Congress at end of October

Xinhua, September 25, 2015 Adjust font size:

U.S. House of Representatives Speaker John Boehner will resign from the Congress at the end of October, local media reported Friday.

A Boehner aide told NBC News that Boehner believes "putting members through prolonged leadership turmoil would do irreparable damage to the institution."

The aide said the Speaker "is proud of what this majority has accomplished, and his speakership, but for the good of the Republican Conference and the institution, he will resign the speakership and his seat in Congress, effective October 30."

Boehner, 65, has been criticized by conservatives in GOP. They accused Boehner for failing to fight the Obama administration on issues important to the Republican party.

The Ohio Republican were re-elected as Speaker of the House in January. He was due to serve another two-year term as Republicans enjoy a stronger House majority.

Boehner, who was first elected to Congress in 1990, became Speaker of the House in 2011. Endi
