Tokyo stocks open higher in early trading amid U.S. rate hike hopes

Tokyo stocks rose in early trading Friday amid resilient hopes for an imminent U.S. rate hike.

At 9:15 a.m. local time, the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average rose 197.79 points, or 1.13 percent, from Thursday to 17,769.62. The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange was up 15.78 points, or 1.11 percent, to 1,442.75.

Gainers were led by pharmaceuticals, utilities and insurance. Endi
