Ugandan police issue terror alert ahead of Eid celebrations

Xinhua, September 24, 2015 Adjust font size:

Ugandan police late on Wednesday issued a terror alert warning that a Somali militant group was planning to hit the capital during the Eid celebrations on Thursday.

Police Chief Kale Kayihura said in a statement that intelligence information shows Al-Shabaab is planning to hit mosques, especially in areas that have the Somali community.

"While the hunt for the Al-Shabaab cell/group behind this planned attack is ongoing, we call upon the general public to be extra alert and vigilant," Kayihura said.

He urged the public to report any suspicious person or object to the nearest police station or authority.

He said police has put in place counter terrorism measures to ensure that the city and the country enjoy Eid celebrations peacefully.

Al-Shabaab has constantly warned Uganda that it would launch attacks in the country if it does not withdraw its peacekeeping troops from Somalia.

The militant group in 2010 launched twin bomb attacks in Kampala killing about 80 people and injuring several others. Endit
