Iran marked the 34th anniversary of the war with its neighboring country Iraq on Tuesday by a large-scale military parade and displaying its military achievements.
The country's armed forces, the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) and the Basij militia voluntary forces took part in a parade to display the military capabilities of the Islamic Republic at the ceremony.
The Iran-Iraq war, lasting from September 1980 to August 1988, came at a great cost of lives and economic damage to the two countries. Half a million Iraqi and Iranian soldiers as well as civilians are believed to have died in the war, with many more injured.
Addressing the ceremony, President Hassan Rouhani hailed what he called the "resistance and achievements" of Iran in the nuclear talks concluded in July by an agreement between Iran and the world's major powers.
Rouhani also offered Iran's help to any regional country which faces and might be in danger of terrorism threats.
"We announce it to the world today that the biggest anti-terror armed forces is the army of the Islamic republic and the neighboring states can only rely on Iran in their struggle against terrorism as other powers would not defend them" against terrorists, Rouhani said.
The military might of Iran is aimed at deterring purposes and his country will not hesitate to respond firmly to any aggression, said Rouhani. Endit
