Israeli soldiers fire at Palestinian attackers amid tensions in West Bank

Xinhua, September 22, 2015 Adjust font size:

Israeli forces shot and seriously wounded a Palestinian woman after she allegedly tried to stab a soldier near a checkpoint in the West Bank city of Hebron on Tuesday morning, officials and local media said.

A military spokesperson said that "an attack was thwarted as a Palestinian attempted to stab an Israeli Defense Force soldier at a military position in Hebron."

A Palestinian youth was shot dead by Israeli soldiers after attempting to throw a bomb at soldiers in Hebron overnight, according to a military spokesperson.

The incidents occurred amidst a wave of Palestinian unrest in Jerusalem over visiting rights the flashpoint al-Aqsa mosque compound. The site, known to Muslim as Haram al-Sharif and the Temple Mount to Jews, is the city's most sensitive site.

On Monday, dozens of Palestinians were injured as Israeli forces tried to disperse rallies in Hebron and other West Bank cities over "the ongoing Israeli aggression" in the al-Aqsa mosque compound.

Last week, a 26-year-old Palestinian was shot and critically wounded after allegedly throwing a firebomb at a car near the Jewish settlement of Itamar.

Israel occupied the West Bank in the 1967 Mideast War and has been controlling it ever since in a move condemned by the international community. Endit
