Mexican women's fencing wins gold in Junior World Cup

Xinhua, September 22, 2015 Adjust font size:

Mexicans Julieta Toledo, Tania Arrayales, Anilu Valencia and Vanessa Infante won the gold medal in Fencing Junior World Cup held this weekend in San Jose, Costa Rica, Mexican press reported Monday.

The Mexican women's team defeated the United States last Sunday in sabre. Last year, Mexico also defeated the Americans in the same category.

The Mexican squad has been improving in recent years. Toledo was the world runner-up in 2014, Infante took a bronze medal in 2013 World Cup, Arrayales was world champion in Spain 2014 and Valencia was bronze-medal winner in satellite World Cup held in 2014.

Mexico came from behind as the United States led 10-1 in the first touches, but Toledo reacted to get back in the match and win 45-35. The United States settled for the silver medal and bronze medal went to Japan.

With this result, Mexico, currently third in the world rankings, might climb to the top and become one of the favorites in the next World Cup to be held next year in France. Endi
