Palestinians seek int'l intervention against Israeli "escalation" in violence

Xinhua, September 19, 2015 Adjust font size:

The Palestinian government on Saturday demanded international intervention to stop the Israeli violence "escalation" in Jerusalem, the West Bank and the Gaza Strip.

In a statement, the government urged the United Nations to intervene and "compel Israel to cease its violations in the Palestinian territories, including the raids and violations of the Al-Aqsa Mosque, and air-striking the besieged Gaza Strip."

Palestinian government spokesman Ehab Bseiso said that the latest escalation is a part of the Israeli government's policy to "undermine the Palestinian and international political efforts, destroy the two-state solution and kill any chance for establishing an independent Palestinian state."

The only solution to this conflict is to "end the Israeli occupation to the Palestinian lands, and the establishment of the independent Palestinian state on the 1967 borders, with east Jerusalem as its capital," the statement quoted Bseiso as saying.

The statement came after an Israeli airstrike raided the Gaza Strip early Saturday, Israeli and Palestinian sources confirmed.

Israeli war jets struck Gaza-based training facilities belonging to Islamic Hamas armed wing and an agricultural land. No injuries or damages were reported.

A few hours before the airstrike, Israel announced that a rocket was fired from Gaza into the southern Israeli town of Sderot on Friday.

Israeli media reported that an Israeli woman was lightly injured and a bus was damaged. Israel vowed a tough response to the rocket attack.

The escalation followed days of tension between Israel and the Palestinians in east Jerusalem, where Palestinians protested the entrance of Jewish groups to Al-Aqsa Mosque compound in the city.

More confrontations erupted in different cities in the West Bank Friday after Palestinians took to the streets to protest the Israeli "attack" on the Islamic holy site of Al-Aqsa.

Angry demonstrators hurled stones at the Israeli army in different contact points, whereas the army responded with fire.

Several injuries with live bullets, rubber bullets and suffocation were reported in the West Bank. Endit
