China-funded 20mln USD facilities for Ghanaian university inaugurated

A China-funded project of facilities for Ghana's University of Health and Allied Sciences was inaugurated on Friday.

The Chinese government provided 20 million U.S. dollars for the project, with work carried out by a Chinese firm.

The new facilities compromise 11 buildings, several parking lots and basketball courts as well as roads and pavements, on some 2.56 acres of land at three sites of the university.

At the handover ceremony, Chinese Ambassador to Ghana Sun Baohong said both Ghana and China attack great importance to education.

"We both believe the talents decide a nation's development and progress. Education has always been one of the priorities for our bilateral cooperation," she noted.

This year China has provided scholarships for 90 Ghanaian students and training opportunities for over 700 Ghanaians.

"I think the new constructions and equipment aided by the Chinese government will enable more Ghanaians to receive medical education in the university," the ambassador said.

Ghana's Minister of Education, Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, lauded the Chinese support for the country's educational sector.

The minister also said the cooperation between young Ghanaians employed by the Chinese construction firm and their Chinese colleagues "have brought out the best results for the project." Enditem
