Feature: Internet of Things is future

Xinhua, September 18, 2015 Adjust font size:

The Internet of Things (IoT) is the future, this is the opinion of one of the visitors, Claudio Fiorillo, at the first edition of the IoT Solutions World Congress (IOTSWC) being held in the Spanish northeastern city of Barcelona these days.

Fiorillo, from Deloitte, has travelled from Argentina to Barcelona in order to learn from the latest news in IoT.

"I think IoT is the future for different industries," he said, adding that "in my case, I am interested in the industry of financial services, and the model of business changes a lot in banking and insurance services."

"This is not only because of new technologies," he specified, "but also because new generations do not want to do things without being connected."

"It is a good initiative," he told Xinhua, "however there are some things to improve: exhibitors and the latest on IoT should be more visible, less on screens and more on display."

Xavier, another visitor, told Xinhua that he would like to see more sectors represented at the Congress.

"It has too much representation from the industry sector and I would like to see from other sectors and for general public," he said.

The Congress covers areas such as manufacturing, transport and logistics, healthcare, technology, energy and utilities and innovation. Apart from that there are plenary, keynotes and parallel sessions to address different topics related to the IoT solutions.

"New companies with this technology will be disruptive and change the market and those companies with the ability to quickly assimilate these innovations will tend to register a strong growth," Roger Bou, director of the IOTSWC, pointed out.

Over 120 speakers and 90 leading international companies are gathering in Fira de Barcelona from Wednesday to Friday in order to show the latest technology on IoT.

This is the case of Roman Romaniuk, from Wind River, a company that designs devices for smart cities. The company showcases these days a model of a smart city where there is a smart building, smart street lights, medical devices, transportation and smart homes.

The smart building is based on a system that helps to save energy achieving a better efficiency. Those air conditioners are connected, Romaniuk explained, they exchange information and take turns to provide the building with air.

Apart from other options, "you can connect on the Internet, where you have a calendar for your building, you know when the conference starts. You can automatically start you air conditioning and when the conference is over, shut it down, nobody has to do anything," Romaniuk said.

The IoT comes to an end on Friday and expects to receive around 4,000 attendees. Endit
