1st LD: Libyan militants storm prison, killing 3

Xinhua, September 18, 2015 Adjust font size:

The Islamic State (IS) affiliates claimed responsibility for killing three guards in an attack on a prison near Mitiga airport in the Libyan capital Tripoli on Friday, according to a military source.

"An armed group attacked the headquarter of the Libyan Deterrence Force on Friday morning. They managed to free some prisoners who are detained on terrorist charges," Libyan Special Deterrence Force said in a statement on its social media webpage.

"Three members of the Special Deterrence Force were killed in the attack," the statement added.

IS affiliates in Tripoli claimed responsibility for the attack on a social media account.

Other Libyan security sources said the attack was close to the sole functioning airport.

Tripoli, controlled by the Islamist militias, has recently witnessed similar attacks that IS affiliates claimed responsibility for.

Libya has been suffering security vacuum and chaos ever since the fall and death of former leader Muammar Gaddafi in 2011.

The country is plagued with escalating violence and similar attacks. Endit
