The Hungarian government will extend a state of emergency caused by mass immigration to the two southwestern counties of Baranya and Somogy on the border with Croatia, officials said on Thursday.
Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Peter Szijjarto said Hungary would begin building a fence on its border with Croatia to protect the border, the country and the Schengen zone.
Croatia's immigration system collapsed within a single day, Szijjarto said, adding Croatian immigration authorities lost control over the processes taking place in their country and sent migrants towards Hungary without registering them.
Hungarian News Agency MTI reported that Hungarian police have apprehended some 500 illegal migrants who crossed the border with Croatia into Baranya on Thursday.
Hungarian State Secretary Laszlo Szabo summoned Croatian ambassador on Thursday to lodge a complaint that the steps Croatia took were unacceptable, Szijjarto said.
Hungary declared a state of emergency on Tuesday in the two southern counties of Csongrad and Bacs-Kiskun as new laws preventing migrants and refugees from illegally entering the country went into effect. Csongrad abuts the Serbian and Romanian borders, while Bacs-Kiskun is on the Serbian border.
Szijjarto is scheduled to visit Belgrade for talks with Serbian Foreign Minister Ivica Dacic and Interior Minister Nebojsa Stefanovic on Friday over the mass migration issue facing their countries. Enditem
