Tokyo shares plunge on unchanged U.S. rates

Tokyo shares opened the trading Friday sharply lower as sentiment here was disappointed by the unchanged U.S. interest rates after a Federal Reserve's policy meeting overnight.

At 9:15 a.m., the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average lost 294.00 points, or 1.60 percent, from Thursday to 18,138.27.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange was down 27.69 points, or 1.86 percent, at 1, 464.22. Endi
