Croatia PM, Austrian Chancellor agree to cooperate on refugee crisis

Xinhua, September 17, 2015 Adjust font size:

Croatian Prime Minister Zoran Milanovic and Austrian Chancellor Werner Faymann on Thursday agreed to cooperate on the refugee crisis, but did not discuss possible corridors through Croatia and Slovenia.

They agreed the refugee issue was a pan-European challenge and one or two countries couldn't handle it alone, Croatian news agency Hina quoted Faymann's spokeswoman Susanna Enk as saying.

At a cabinet session, also on Thursday, Milanovic warned that although Croatia would be constructive and cooperative, its capacities were limited.

During the previous 24 hours, nearly 6,000 refugees entered Croatia through the border with Serbia following Hungary closing it's borders on Monday and Tuesday, according to the Interior Ministry.

It was not considering closing the border for now, but if the number of refugees exceeded Croatia's capacities, it would seek international assistance, deputy foreign minister Josko Klisovic said on Thursday.

More than 20,000 migrants could be expected in Croatia in the next two weeks, according to unofficial estimates. Endit
