An 8.3-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Chile at 7:55 p.m. local time (22:55 GMT), rocking buildings in the capital Santiago and sending people flooding into the streets.
The magnitude of the earthquake was first reported as being 7.2 but was quickly upgraded to 7.9 and then 8.3 by the United States Geological Service (USGS). (Chile-Earthquake-Tsunami)

CAIRO -- A police general was shot dead by unknown militants on Wednesday while checking police points at a square in Arish town of restive North Sinai province, northeast of the capital Cairo, the Egyptian Interior Ministry reported.
"The assailants drove a white vehicle and shot at a security point at Al-Nasr Square near Arish police station that wounded General Khaled Othman to death," the ministry's spokesman said in a statement, noting that the forces exchanged fire with the militants who ran away.
