UN General Assembly on Tuesday opened its 70th session, during which the much-anticipated Post-2015 Development Agenda is expected to be adopted at an upcoming summit from Sept. 25-27.

"It is a great honor for me to open the 70th session," said Mogens Lykketoft, president of this session. "The session, I hope, will be truly historical." (UN-GA70)

CAIRO -- Two soldiers and 55 militants were killed Tuesday in North Sinai during an extensive operation by Egyptian army against Islamists, military spokesman said in a statement.

Twelve other soldiers were injured while 35 militants arrested in the same day, the statement added. (Egypt-Sinai-Operation)

DAMASCUS -- At least 30 people were killed and over 180 others wounded on Tuesday in a fresh rebel mortar attack against government-controlled areas in Syria's northern province of Aleppo, pan-Arab al-Mayadeen TV said.

Jihadi groups fired multiple mortar rounds into residential areas in Aleppo city, mainly the districts of Hamadiniyeh, Akramiyeh, and New Aleppo, said the TV, adding that the death toll could rise due to the large number of critically wounded people. (Syria-Aleppo-Mortar Attack)

BRUSSELS -- European Union (EU) interior ministers will hold an emergency meeting on Sept. 22 to cope with refugee crisis, officials said Tuesday.

Jean Asselborn, Luxembourg's Minister for Immigration and Asylum and President of the Council, said the meeting will focus on the refugee redistribution plan among EU member states. (EU-Migration)

SAN FRANCISCO -- A float plane crashed in southwest Alaska on Tuesday, killing three of the 10 people aboard.

Alaska State Troopers said the DHC-3T Turbine Otter crashed on takeoff from the East Wind Lake near Iliamna, about 280 kilometers southwest of Anchorage, and was reported just before 6:30 a.m. local time. (US-Plane Crash) Endi
