S. Korea names new head of Joint Chiefs of Staff

South Korea on Monday named Army Gen. Lee Sun-jin as the new head of the Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) in a major military reshuffle, the defense ministry said.

Lee, 61, is a graduate of the Army Academy. His nomination marks the first time since the country founded its military that one who didn't graduate from the Korea Military Academy is nominated as the top military commander.

He served as the commander of the country's second operations command and the second infantry division.

Jang Joon-kyu, chief of the first operations command, was nominated as the new Army Chief of Staff, and Jeong Chung-doo, chief director of the JCS strategic planning, was named as new Air Force Chief of Staff.

Kim Hyun-jib, head of the third operations command, was named as new deputy commander of combined forces command.

New chiefs of the first, second and third operations commands were also nominated in a promotion reshuffle. Endi
