Hamas welcomes raising Palestinian flag at UN headquarters

Xinhua, September 13, 2015 Adjust font size:

Islamic Hamas movement welcomed on Saturday raising the Palestinian flag on the United Nations headquarters as a non-member observer state.

Sami Abu Zuhri, Hamas spokesman in Gaza, said in an emailed press statement that more efforts have to be exerted to enable the Palestinian people to gain their rights of freedom and self determination.

"Hamas movement welcomes raising the Palestinian flag on the UN headquarters and agencies and thanks to all countries who voted in favor of the bid," said Abu Zuhri.

Earlier, 119 countries of the UN General Assembly voted in favor of a bid to raise the Palestinian flag on the UN agencies and headquarters all over the world as the flag of the non-member observer state of Palestine.

Eight countries voted against the bid, including the United States, while 45 countries sustained.

On Nov. 29, 2012, the UN General Assembly had overwhelmingly voted in favor of upgrading the Palestinians representation in the UN to a non-member observer state.

Meanwhile, Abu Zuhri condemned the decision of the United States to list names of three of Hamas movement leaders in the world's groups of terrorists.

"The decision is unjust, biased to the occupation and a hostile to Arab and Islamic nations," said Abu Zuhri. Endit
