Bidding begins for first construction phase of new Mexico City airport

Xinhua, September 11, 2015 Adjust font size:

The Mexican government has begun the first bidding process for the initial stage of construction of the new Mexico City international airport, the authorities said Thursday.

This stage is basically about preparation of the site for building, including cleaning of the site, demolition and drainage, construction of provisional access routes, and leveling of the terrain for the building of runways.

Communications and Transportation Minister Gerardo Ruiz Esparza said another bidding process will begin in November.

Total investment for the airport project is expected to be 169 billion pesos (10 billion U.S. dollars). The airport is expected to open in 2020 and will have the capacity of handling 120 million passengers a year.

Mexico City's current Benito Juarez International Airport is close to maximum capacity of 32 million passengers a year, despite the opening of Terminal 2 in 2007. Endi
