Walmart to open its first supermarket in Nicaragua

American supermarket giant, Walmart, will open its first store in Nicaragua in December, a signal of its confidence in the Central American country's investment climate, the company announced Thursday.

Eduardo Garcia, Walmart's director of Corporate Affairs for Mexico and Central America, said Walmart was investing in the construction of a building to house its first supermarket in Nicaragua. It will open in the first half of December 2015 with an investment worth 17 million U.S. dollars.

According to Walmart's office in Nicaragua, construction began in May and is 55 percent complete.

The launch of the store will strengthen the company's position in the country, where it already opens the La Union supermarket chain, as well as the Pali and Maxi Pali stores.

Speaking to the press, Garcia said Walmart would be bringing its "A Hand to Grow" program to Nicaragua to help its farmers and agricultural suppliers, including small- and medium-sized enterprises, to join Walmart's supply chain. Endit
