Sri Lanka's Army chief lauds China's commitment to world peace

Xinhua, September 10, 2015 Adjust font size:

China over the years has shown to the rest of the world how a country, with proper planning and dynamic leadership, can contribute to world peace and stability, said Sri Lankan Army Commander Lt. Gen. Crisanthe De Silva.

In an exclusive interview with Xinhua recently, De Silva said that since the end of World War II, China had come a long way and is regarded today as one of the largest contributors towards world peace.

"The achievements of the Chinese people are very significant since 1949 when the People's Republic of China was founded. China indeed has traveled a long way and today, it is the second largest economy in the world," De Silva added.

De Silva said that today China is being looked upon by many countries in the world as a friend who is willing to help them at all times. "So in that sense, my view is that China is a magnificent country with very friendly, pleasant and wonderful people," he said.

Commenting on the military parade that China held last Thursday to commemorate Chinese people's victory over Japanese aggression and the 70th anniversary of victory in the World Anti- Fascist War II, De Silva said that the sacrifices and contribution made by China during the long armed struggle was one of the main reasons behind the attainment of peace and prosperity throughout China and in the region.

"During that dark period, the entire world desperately wanted to see an end to the conflict. In that effort, China's contribution can be regarded as very significant. China has shown to the rest of the world that a firm determination among its people coupled with a very strong and dynamic leadership could make a remarkable contribution towards world peace," De Silva said.

Indeed, De Silva said, without China's courage and firm commitment to achieve victory in the last war, the peace that the region is enjoying today would not have been possible.

Chinese President Xi Jinping, in his speech during the parade which paid tribute to the Chinese people who had fought hard and sacrificed their lives in the war against the Japanese aggression, announced that China would cut its military personnel by 300,000.

De Silva said that the speech showed China's strong dedication to the vision ahead, adding China's commitment towards peace is praiseworthy.

"President Xi Jinping, to me, is a very strong and a great leader who understands the feelings of the people. We are indeed very fortunate to have a leader of his caliber on the world stage where countries like Sri Lanka could look forward for help and assistance," De Silva said.

The Army Chief also mentioned China's help during the country's 30 year civil war, saying the assistance provided by the Chinese People's Liberation Army had helped develop the Sri Lankan Army into a professional organization. Endi
