Poland ready to accept more refugees: PM

Xinhua, September 9, 2015 Adjust font size:

Polish Prime Minister Ewa Kopacz announced Tuesday that the country has the possibilities to accept more than 2,000 refugees, a number declared before.

She said Poland would take responsible decision, however, enumerated certain conditions.

Kopacz held a meeting on the refugees problem, together with Polish parties leaders.

She said facing the humanitarian tragedy, Poland has to manifest solidarity.

However, she said the government has thoroughly checked the possibilities of the countries and assessed what can be done.

Kopacz named three important factors need to be fulfilled to "make responsible decisions".

First, a list of safe, secure countries should be created. The "economical immigrants" will consequently be sent to these countries, as Poland cannot afford these type of immigrants.

Moreover, steps need to be taken to avoid uncontrolled wave of such immigrants coming to the country. "Poland is ready to help refugees, which means people whose life and health is really threatened," the prime minister said.

The other conditions were: strengthening the outside EU borders and reserving the right to verify the newly arrived to ensure the country's security.

Polish President Andrzej Duda said during the Economic Forum in Krynica, that he did not agree on imposing the quotas on various EU countries.

Polish Foreign Minister Grzegorz Schetyna said he was an advocate of voluntary decisions regarding how many refugees will be accepted by a given state.

Poland will have to decide and declare its will in accepting refugees in the European Council. On Monday, the European Commission presented new propositions for the EU countries facing the constantly growing immigrants and refugees problem. The new quota for Poland will be probably around 12,000, against the 2,000 declared by the Polish government. Endit
