EU presents 500-mln-euro package to support farmers

Xinhua, September 7, 2015 Adjust font size:

The European Union (EU) on Monday decided to present a 500-million-euro comprehensive package of measures to support European farmers on the heels of Monday's protest here which saw as many as 5,000 farmers gather in the European district to protest falling meat and milk prices.

The money is to be used "immediately" for the benefit of farmers, said Jyrki Katainen, vice president of EU's executive body the European Commission.

"This response demonstrates that the Commission takes its responsibility towards farmers very seriously and is prepared to back it up with the appropriate funds," he said.

The EU's response aims to address the cash-flow difficulties farmers are facing, stabilizing markets, and addressing the functioning of the supply chain, the Commission said in a press release.

The Commission also proposed that the most significant part of the funds would be provided to all member states to support the dairy sector.

The EU's decision came out of an emergency meeting among 28 agricultural ministers. Endit
