Visitors spend more during Great Singapore Sale in 2015

Xinhua, September 7, 2015 Adjust font size:

Total spending during the annual Great Singapore Sale (GSS), which lasts the whole June and July in 2015, rose 2.2 percent over the previous year, due to increase in purchases from visitors, MasterCard said on Monday.

MasterCard conducts the annual report on its holders's spending during the two-month sale. Its latest figure showed that the total spending of Mastercard holders reached 2.12 billion Singapore dollars this year from 2.08 billion Singapore dollars a year ago.

Visitors have been the new drive of consumption, with visiting cardholders spent 708 million Singapore dollars during GSS, which saw an increase of 15.3 percent over the previous year, while spending by local cardholders dropped slightly to 1.41 billion Singapore dollars from 1.46 billion Singapore dollars in 2014.

MasterCard said that visitors from Australia, Malaysia, China and Japan have spent most on restaurants and other eating places during their stay in Singapore.

"What's interesting is that this year we are seeing dining places emerge consistently as a top spend category for visitors - an indication that fine dining may be growing in appeal for travelers to Singapore," said Deborah Heng, group head and general manager, Singapore for MasterCard. Endi
