Hundreds of people rally in Vancouver for refugee issues

Xinhua, September 7, 2015 Adjust font size:

Hundreds of people turned out in Downtown Vancouver in west Canada on Sunday to show their support to world-wide calls of concerning the situation of Syrian refugees.

Many people held placards such as "Let Them In" and Why is Canada Waiting?" to call on the Canadian government to accept more refugees from the middle east and return to its traditional role as a country that used to have a reputation for accepting refugees.

The Syrian refugee crisis caused the attention of the world since last week after the photo of a drowned Syrian boy on a Turkish beach circulated on social media.

Reports said there are 60 million displaced people around the world and more than 45,000 refugees had died while fleeing their homeland since 2000.

Canadian Immigration Minister Chris Alexander said last week the government has already resettled nearly 2,300 Syrians and 22,000 Iraqis and has further plans to accept 23,000 Iraqi and 11,300 Syrian refugees.

The rally in Vancouver was one of several protests across the country this weekend. Endi
