New Zealand wholesale trade sales edge downwards

The value of New Zealand's wholesale trade sales slipped by 0.3 percent to 21.8 billion NZ dollars (13.69 billion U.S. dollars) in the quarter to the end of June, the government statistics agency said Monday.
Wholesale trade sales were down 0.1 percent from the previous quarter and the figure followed a fall of 0.7 percent in the March quarter, according to Statistics New Zealand.
"The wholesaling industries had mixed results this quarter," business indicators senior manager Neil Kelly said in a statement.
"Three of the six industries had higher sales, and three had lower sales."
Grocery, liquor and tobacco products was the sector with the largest increase, up 1.4 percent, led by increased fruit exports.
The biggest falls were in basic materials and in machinery and equipment, which were both down 1.4 percent.
While the trend for wholesale trade sales had generally been rising since the September 2009 quarter, it had fallen in recent quarters, but remained at a high level. Endi
