Lithuania tightens airport security procedures

Xinhua, September 5, 2015 Adjust font size:

Lithuanian airports have tightened passenger screening procedures, Vilnius International Airport announced on Friday.

According to the press release, the procedures have been tightened in Vilnius, Kaunas and Palanga airports as of Sept. 1.

Some of the passengers are subject to additional screening for possible contact with explosives.

Special equipment is used to take microscopic samples from various parts of a body and analyze within seconds, whether a person has recently had a contact with any forbidden chemical substances.

Special explosives detection devices have been first used in Vilnius airport in March, following the implementation of the European requirements to screen passengers' luggage for possible explosives.

"Now we have started to screen passengers as well," Linas Saukaitis, Chief Safety and Security Officer at Lithuanian Airports, said in the press release.

According to Vilnius airport, passengers are being selected to additional screening randomly, using computer equipment. Endit
