5 shot dead in suspected Boko Haram attack in NE Nigeria

At least five people were shot dead and six others injured in an attack by suspected Boko Haram members on a remote community in Nigeria's northeastern state of Borno, a security source told Xinhua on Friday.

The attack was carried out late Wednesday in Mainari, a community located about 22km from the state capital Maiduguri, said the unnamed security source.

A witness identified as Hassan Mohammed said those injured are being treated in a public hospital in Maiduguri.

Boko Haram militants are active in Borno state and have launched series of attacks there.

The Islamist group has been waging war against the government since 2009, killing more than 13,000 people.

Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari two weeks ago ordered the army to end the insurgency within three months. Endit
