Mexican senate confirms country's new ambassador to U.S.

Xinhua, September 3, 2015 Adjust font size:

The Mexican Senate on Wednesday ratified Miguel Basanez Ebergenyi as the country's new ambassador to the United States, a function he will assume immediately.

With 98 votes in favor, three against and no abstentions, Basanez Ebergenyi's nomination was easily achieved. Former Secretary of Foreign Affairs Jose Antonio Meade confirmed his new title.

Meade, who has become Secretary of Social Development in a recent cabinet reshuffle, said the U.S. government had welcomed the nomination.

Basanez Ebergenyi will follow in the footsteps of former Ambassador Eduardo Medina Mora, who left his position in May to become a justice with Mexico's Supreme Court, the highest judicial authority in the land.

Basanez Ebergenyi is currently associate director of Fletcher School's Judiciary Reform Program at Tufts University. He has a law degree from the National Autonomous University of Mexico as well as a Master's in political philosophy and a Ph.D. in political sociology from the London School of Economics. Endi
