Spain's unemployment rises by 0.54 pct in August

Xinhua, September 2, 2015 Adjust font size:

The number of people registered as unemployed in Spain rose by 0.54 percent from July to August, according to data released on Wednesday by the Ministry of Employment.

The ministry said there were a total of 4,067,955 people registered as unemployed in August, which meant 21,679 people more without a job since July. The figure is higher than that of August 2014 when unemployment had increased by 8,070 people in the eight month of the year.

Unemployment in the services sector increased by 22,876 people due to the end of the tourists' peak season. It was followed by the industry and the construction sectors that saw increases of 5,802 people and 4,643 people respectively.

On the other hand, the number of unemployed people in the agriculture sector fell by 5,964 people.

The ministry also reported that unemployment fell by 359,975 people on a year-on-year basis, an 8.1 percent fall.

The Spanish Secretary of Employment, Juan Pablo Riesgo, said this data confirm the improvement of Spain's labor market.

Spain's Minister of Employment Fatima Banez said the rise in unemployment registered in August "is normal" because Spain "stops" during that month, however she highlighted that "it was not worse than other Augusts as the number of people affiliated to the Social Security system fell less".

She stated that the important aspect was "the trend" and pointed out that nowadays "the economic recovery is a fact and employment is here to stay". Endit
