Xinhua, September 1, 2015 Adjust font size:

Indonesia's consumer price index reached 7.18 percent in August, falling from 7.26 percent in July, amid growing food prices and transport costs, the national statistics bureau said on Tuesday.

Head of the bureau Suryamin said that food prices surged by 9. 26 percent annually in August, utility cost scaled up by 6.38 percent and transportation, communication and financial services jumped by 8.17 percent.

On month, inflation accelerated at a slower pace of 0.39 percent in August compared with 0.93 percent in July, Suryamin said.

"This indicates that the control of inflation has improved," he told a press conference.

Core inflation, excluding volatile component and prices determined by the government, rose by 4.92 percent in August from a year earlier, he said.

The Indonesian central bank estimates annual inflation to ease to 4.3 to 4.5 percent by the end of the year end and GDP to grow at 4.9 percent for the whole year.

The bank has kept its main rate at 7.5 percent since February. Endi
