Rap music film "Straight Outta Compton" continues to lead North American box office

Rap music film "Straight Outta Compton" continued to dominate box office in North America this weekewnd.

The movie, distributed by Universal Pictures about the rise and fall of the Compton, California hip hop group N.W.A., was on track to fetch another 13.2 million U.S. dollars in tickets earnings this weekend, down 50 percent from last weekend, which will bring its three-week gross sales to 134.1 million dollars in North America and 140.9 million dollars worldwide.

"Straight Outta Compton" is the fourth film to lead the box office for at least three consecutive weekends this year. The other three films are Warner Bros' "American Sniper" and two Universal releases of "Furious 7" and "Jurassic World."

"War Room," a Sony movie aimed at religious audience, debuted in the second place with 11 million dollars in ticket sales. For opening, the film was screened at 1,135 locations. In breakdown, the audience for "War Room" skewed towards female moviegoers (60 percent) and heavily towards moviegoers over the age of 25 (85 percent). The critics, however, gave it a poor 17 percent in approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

In its fifth week of exhibition, Paramount's "Mission: Impossible Rogue Nation" was ranked in the third place, with 8.3 million dollars in weekend sales and a running total of over 170 million dollars in North America.

The R-rated action thriller "No Escape" opened in the fourth place with 8.3 million dollars in weekend sales from 3,355 locations. It received a "B+" rating on CinemaScore and 41 percent in positive rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes.

Rounding out the rest 10 most popular movies in the United States and Canada were "Sinister 2" (4.7 million dollars), "Man From U.N.C.L.E." (4.4 million), "Hitman: Agent 47" (3.9 million), "The Gift" (3.1 million), "Jurassic World" (3.1 million) and "Ant-Man" (3 million). Endit
