Hop harvest in Germany falls 27 pct in 2015 due to drought

Xinhua, August 28, 2015 Adjust font size:

Extreme drought and heat has spoiled German hop harvest in 2015, leading to obviously poor harvest below the average level, Association of German Hop Growers announced on Thursday.

According to the president of the association Johann Pichelmaier, this year's hop harvest fell nationwide by 27 percent compared to last year, and it decreased by as much as 29 percent in Hallertau region, Germany's most important hop growing area.

"The hop harvest in 2015 will be significantly below the average level," Pichelmaier said in the Bavarian municipality of Nandlstadt.

Some experts have even expected this year's hop harvest to be the worst since 2003.

However, the association emphasized that consumers do not need to worry about an increase in the price of beer because of brewers' storage.

According to Pichelmaier, around a loss of about 50 million euros (56.5 million dollars) is expected due to drought and heat.

About one third of the world's hops, used as flavoring and stabilizers during beer brewing, are produced in Germany. (1 euro = 1.13 U.S. Dollar) Endit
