Chinese stocks staged a relief rally on Thursday after shaking off a five-day losing streak.

The benchmark Shanghai Composite Index soared 5.34 percent to 3, 083.59 points, the biggest single-day gain in a month, though dwarfed by a combined 20-percent loss since last Thursday. The Shenzhen Component Index added 3.58 percent to close at 10,254.35 points.

The trading volume on the Shanghai and Shenzhen exchanges was thin on Thursday at 765.3 billion yuan (119 billion U.S. dollars), down from nearly 900 billion yuan on Wednesday.

TOKYO -- Tokyo shares ended the trading Thursday higher tracing gains in the overnight U.S. stocks gains.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average ended up 197.61 points, or 1. 08 percent, from Wednesday to 18,574.44.

The turnover was about 3,078.2 billion yen (about 25.63 billion U.S. dollars). Enditem

SYDNEY -- Australian stocks jumped for a second straight session on Thursday as investors swept in on recently battered stocks.

The benchmark S&P/ASX200 closed at 5,233.3 points, up 60.5 points or 1.17 per cent, while the broader All Ordinaries lifted 63.7 points, or 1.23 per cent, to 5,242.6.

MANILA -- Philippine shares closed 2.55 percent higher on Thursday.

The benchmark Philippine Stock Exchange index increased by 154. 17 points to 7,022.09. The all-share index went up by 74.93 points, or 1.91 percent, to 4,006.37.

Trading volume reached 2.47 billion shares worth 14.59 billion pesos (312.12 million U.S. dollars).

HONG KONG -- Hong Kong stocks rose 758.15 points, or 3.6 percent, to close on Thursday at 21,838.54 points.

The benchmark Hang Seng Index traded between 21,407.59 and 21, 963.43. Turnover totaled 122.43 billion HK dollars (15.8 billion U. S. dollars).

HONG KONG -- Taiwan's share prices closed higher Thursday with the weighted index up 108.96 points, or 1.41 percent, to close at 7,824.55, according to news reaching here from Taipei.

Turnover totaled 108.99 billion new Taiwan dollars (about 3.36 billion U.S. dollars).

HO CHI MINH CITY -- VN-Index, the stock market index of Ho Chi Minh (HCM) City bourse in south Vietnam, closed at 555.81 points on Thursday, up 9.92 points, or 1.82 percent, against the previous trading day's closing session.

About 127.733 million shares worth 2.065 trillion Vietnamese dong (VND) (94.35 million U.S. dollars) changed hands at the southern HCM City Stock Exchange. Prices of 212 stocks went up, 41 stocks fell down, while 41 stocks remained unchanged.

HANOI -- Stock market index of Vietnam's capital Hanoi, HNX- Index, closed at 77.02 points on Thursday, up 0.56 points, or 0.73 percent, against the previous trading session.

A total of some 63.364 million shares worth around 564.009 billion Vietnamese dong (some 25.87 million U.S. dollars) were traded at the Hanoi Stock Exchange on Thursday, an increase of 29. 73 percent in volume and 15.74 percent in value against the previous trading session.

SINGAPORE -- Singapore stocks finished higher on Thursday, with the benchmark Straits Times Index up 72.43 points, or 2.52 percent, to close at 2,945.43.

A total of 1.96 billion shares changed hands with turnover of 1. 61 billion Singapore dollars (1.15 billion U.S. dollars).

KUALA LUMPUR -- The Malaysian stock market ended higher here on Thursday.

The Kuala Lumpur Composite Index (KLCI) was at 1,601.70, up 21. 33 points or 1.33 percent, and the Emas was at 10,904.92, up 159. 46 points or 1.46 percent.

Turnover increased to 2.10 billion shares valued at 2.32 billion ringgit Malaysia (547.69 million U.S. dollars), compared with 2.15 billion shares valued at 2.27 billion ringgit Malaysia ( 533.36 million U.S. dollars) on Wednesday.

JAKARTA -- Indonesian shares closed higher by 192.90 points, or 4.55 percent, to 4,430.63 on Thursday.

Some 309,804 transactions were booked, involving 7.59 billion shares worth 7.51 trillion rupiah (about 531.922 million U.S. dollars).

DHAKA -- Bangladesh's DSE (Dhaka Stock Exchange) Broad Index closed Thursday at 4,812.82 points, up 7.16 points or about 0.15 percent from Wednesday's finish.

Total turnover increased to about 4.22 billion taka (about 54. 04 million U.S. dollars) on Thursday from about 4 billion taka ( about 51.20 million U.S. dollars) on Wednesday.
