5 Cambodians get 7 years in jail for antique theft

Xinhua, August 27, 2015 Adjust font size:

A Cambodian court on Thursday sentenced five men to 7 years in prison each for stealing a golden urn containing relics of the Buddha from a mountaintop shrine in Udong Mountain in December, 2013.

The five criminals include four shrine security guards and the chief of security, who were all arrested in December 2013 soon after the incident.

"The court decides to sentence each of them to seven years in prison and fine each of them 8 million riel (2,000 U.S. dollars)," said the verdict.

Buddha relics are vital in terms of cultural and religious value in Cambodia, where some 90 percent of population are Buddhists. Endi
