Algeria foils weapon smuggling on Malian border

Xinhua, August 26, 2015 Adjust font size:

Algerian army on Tuesday foiled an attempt to smuggle war weapons and ammunition on the southern border with Mali, APS news agency quoted a Defense Ministry statement on Wednesday.

The army launched an operation near In Guezzam bordering with Mali and thwarted an attempt to "smuggle four Kalashnikov sub-machine guns, three FMPK machine guns, a Simonov semiautomatic rifle, four 44/91 rifles, a grenade, four magazines and a quantity of ammunition," according to the statement.

It did not specified whether the arms were retrieved after clashing with armed militants or found in hideouts.

This operation came a day after the arrestment of more than 110 smugglers, and a couple of days after foiling an attempt to smuggle a load of weapons on that same area.

Algeria has deployed thousands of troops on the border with Mali, Libya and Tunisia against intrusion attempts of militants and arms. Endit
