Lebanon's cabinet decided on Tuesday in an extraordinary session, presided by Prime Minister Tammam Salam, to reject the winning bidders to manage Lebanon's waste due to their high costs.
The meeting came as the protests over the waste crisis turned violent over the weekend after clashes erupted between the internal security forces and the demonstrators.
"The ministerial committee responsible for handling the crisis was tasked with restarting the process with a new bid document," Lebanese Information Minister Ramzi Jreij read out the cabinet's statement after the session.
However, the government on Tuesday approved a total of 100 million U.S. dollars of investments in the northern Akkar district to build a landfill site.
Lebanon's waste crisis began after the July 17 closure of Naameh landfill serving Beirut and its surroundings, and the garbage started to fill the streets across Beirut. Endit
