Asia's largest glass platform offers dizzy China scene

Xinhua, August 24, 2015 Adjust font size:

A glass platform atop a cliff, the largest of its kind in Asia, is nearing completion in Chongqing, southwest China.

The hanging platform, which is 11 meters wide and 26m long, stands 280m above Karst Valley in Wulong National Geological Park. The glass platform will provide adventurous tourists with a breath-taking panoramic view of the landscape under their feet.

The park boasts three naturally-formed stone bridges, the largest such complex in Asia. In addition, it also has sinkholes, cliffs, caves and other Karst landforms.

The project was designed and planned by a team of 20, according to local media. It will be made from three layers of toughened glass, a single pane is able to bear a maximum weight of 10 tonnes.

The platform is due to open to the public before the upcoming week-long National Day holiday.

The project comes in response to the changing taste of tourists, as many are bored with "conventional sightseeing".

Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, a UNESCO world heritage site featuring pillar-like peak formations in Hunan Province, central China, replaced its rickety wooden-plank road that hugged the edge of a cliff with a similar glass structure in April 2014. The 1,500-meter-long "road of the brave" had attracted over 4.3 million visitors up to the end of March this year. Endit
