Cambodia hails Chinese firm for helping develop telecom industry

Xinhua, August 23, 2015 Adjust font size:

Cambodian Minister of Post and Telecommunications Prak Sokhonn on Sunday praised Chinese-owned Southeast Asia Telecom (Cambodia), or SEATEL, for investing a huge amount of capital in the development of 4G services in Cambodia.

Speaking at the official launch of a SEATEL 4G network here, the minister said the launch of advanced mobile Internet technology would enable Cambodia to narrow the digital gap and improve the efficiency of communications.

"SEATEL's strategic investment on the expansion of network and coverage area to 17 provinces and cities in Cambodia is a timely response to this growing demand and will also bring further benefits to the Cambodian people," he said.

"I'd like to thank all telecommunication companies, including SEATEL, for their commitment to Cambodia's social progress, economic development and livelihood improvement."

SEATEL's general manager Han Hanchou said the company's total investment is about 400 million U.S. dollars, of which 100 million U.S. dollars has been invested so far.

Han said in response to China's One Belt, One Road initiative, SEATEL has built the Southeast Asia Chamber of Commerce (Seacc) website, offering website design, resource and operation support to local chambers of commerce and companies free of charge.

Tan Qingsheng, political councilor of the Chinese embassy to Cambodia, said SEATEL will make great contributions to the progress of Cambodian telecom industry and play an active role in connecting information and people across Cambodia. Endi
