China rally past Serbia for opening win

Title contenders China rallied from one set down Saturday afternoon to beat Serbia 3-1 for their opening victory at the 2015 FIVB Women's World Cup.

Ace spiker Zhu Ting converted on 17 of her 31 killing attempts and added six blocks and one ace for game-high 24 points and led China to the 19-25, 25-23, 25-15 and 25-19 win. Zhang Changning had nine kills, five aces and four stuffs to contribute 18 points for China.

Dropping the first set and trailing by 15-9 in the second, China coach Jenny Lang Ping made several substitutions including replacing the starting setter Shen Jingsi with Ding Xia and her efforts paid off as the Chinese women eventually overtook the lead 20-19 and went on to win the decisive set.

China outblocked Serbia 14-3 while the Europeans were led by Brankica Mihajlovic with 21 points.

Earlier on Saturday, reigning world champions the United States also got off to a winning start at the World Cup as they swept South Korea 3-0.

Foluke Akinradewo scored 15 points to lead the American women to the 25-15, 25-22 and 25-15 victory while South Korea were led by Kim Hee-jin with 11 points.

Aiming to win their first World Cup title, the United States displayed their superiority by producing 10 aces, compared with one for South Korea.

South Korea managed to build up a 13-9 lead in the second set, but the USA team gradually pulled it back at 18-all and went on to seal the set through a spike of Hill.
