WBA Continental Championships to begin semifinal stage

The WBA (World Boxing Association) Continental Championship qualifying stage has finished and now the tournament will hold semifinals in Vargas, local media reported Thursday.

Boxers from 20 countries and regions are fighting in Venezuela to win tickets for the World Cup.

Last Wednesday, five Venezuelan boxers qualified for the World Cup, to be held in October in Doha, Qatar.

Venezuelan Luis Cabrera (60 kg) defeated with a unanimous decision Nicaraguan Nelson Diaz, while Venezulean Albert Ramirez (light heavyweight) also beat American Steve Nelson.

The third ticket for Venezuela was won by Edgar Munoz (over-91 kg), who defeated American Lenroy Thompson 2-1.

The other two tickets for Venezuela were won by flyweight Yoel Finol and welterweight Gabriel Maestre.

Finol won by split decision against Argentine Fernando Martinez while Maestre showed his power as continental champion against American Brian Ceballos. Endi
