Uganda's Ekiring regains Africa's top badminton position

Uganda's top badminton player Edwin Ekiring has regained his top ranking in Africa, new rankings have shown.

According to the latest rankings released on Thursday by the Badminton World Federation, Ekiring moved 27 places to 109 in the world ranking and top in Africa.

The Netherlands-based professional lost his top spot two months ago to South Africa's Jacob Maliekal who is now ranked 123 in the world.

Ekiring who has dominated the rankings for Africa for most of the year improved after reaching the second round of the World Championship in Indonesia last week.

"I am very happy that I have regained my top ranking after accumulating close to 3,000 points after the World Championships," Ekiring told Xinhua.

South Africa's Prakash Vijayanath is ranked third in Africa, while Abdelrahman Kashkal from Egypt is in fourth place. China's Chen Long maintained his top position in the world while Jan O.Jorgensen from Denmark is second.

In the women's rankings Uganda's Bridget Shamin Bangi improved to 147 in the world rankings and fourth in Africa. Nigeria's Grace Gabriel remains Africa's top ranked player and No. 80 in the world. Endi
