Tokyo shares ended the trading Wednesday sharply lower following poor performances of other stocks markets.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average tumbled 331.84 points, or 1. 61 percent, from Tuesday at 20,222.63.

The turnover was about 2,425.4 billion yen (about 19.52 billion U.S. dollars).

BEIJING -- Chinese shares regained territory on Wednesday with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index up 1.23 percent to close at 3,794.11 points.

The Shenzhen Component Index gained 2.18 percent to close at 12, 960.66. The ChiNext Index, tracking China's Nasdaq-style board of growth enterprises, rose 2.66 percent to end at 2,570.69.

HONG KONG -- Hong Kong stocks closed down 307.12 points, or 1. 31 percent, to 23,167.85 on Wednesday.

The benchmark Hang Seng Index traded between 23,138.73 and 23, 586.79. Turnover totaled 91.77 billion HK dollars (about 11.83 billion U.S. dollars).

SEOUL -- Seoul shares ended lower on Wednesday.

The benchmark Korea Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI) declined 16.88 points, or 0.86 percent, to 1,939.38 at the close. Trading volume stood at 498.93 million shares worth 7.1 trillion won (6 billion U.S. dollars).

SYDNEY -- Australian stocks closed higher on Wednesday with energy leading the market on the back of reliance in the oil price and a recovery of finance stocks.

At the official 4:15 (AEST) close, the benchmark S&P/ASX200 rose 77.1 points, or 1.45 per cent, to 5380.2, while the broader All Ordinaries improved 70.4 points, or 1.33 per cent, to 5379.8.

MANILA -- Philippine shares closed 0.15 percent higher on Wednesday.

The benchmark Philippine Stock Exchange index increased by 11. 28 points to 7344.73. The all-share index went up by 4.60 points, or 0.11 percent, to 4188.58.

Trading volume reached 13.65 billion shares worth 6.00 billion pesos (129.45 million U.S. dollars).

HONG KONG -- Taiwan's share prices closed down 1.9 percent on Wednesday with the weighted index down 155.38 points at 8,021.84, according to news reaching here from Taipei.

Turnover totaled 98.64 billion new Taiwan dollars (about 3.04 billion U.S. dollars) during the trading session.

HO CHI MINH CITY -- VN-Index, the stock market index of Ho Chi Minh (HCM) City bourse in southern Vietnam,closed at 577.82 points on Wednesday, down 2.4 points, or 0.41 percent, against the previous trading day's closing session.

About 106.329 million shares worth 1.894 trillion Vietnamese dong (VND) (86.52 million U.S. dollars) changed hands at the southern HCM City Stock Exchange.

VN30-Index, the new benchmark index for the southern bourse, which tracks the 30 leading stocks by both market capitalization and liquidity, closed at 608.91 points, down 2.89 points, or 0.47 percent.

A total of 43.159 million shares worth 1.051 trillion VND (48. 02 million U.S. dollars) were traded on Wednesday.

HANOI -- Stock market index of Vietnam's capital Hanoi, HNX- Index, closed at 79.67 points on Wednesday, up 0.07 points or 0.09 percent, against the previous trading session.

A total of 37.889 million shares worth 406.359 billion Vietnamese dong (18.81 million U.S. dollars) were traded at the Hanoi Stock Exchange on Wednesday, a decrease of 5.66 percent in volume and 15 percent in value against the previous trading session.

SINGAPORE -- Singapore stocks finished lower on Wednesday, with the benchmark Straits Times Index (STI) down 8.40 points, or 0.28 percent, to close at 3,041.25.

A total of 1.51 billion shares changed hands with turnover of 1. 17 billion Singapore dollars (834.8 million U.S. dollars).

DHAKA -- Bangladesh's DSE (Dhaka Stock Exchange) Broad Index closed Wednesday at 4,816.98 points, up 7.71 points or about 0.41 percent from Tuesday's finish.

Total turnover decreased to about 5.50 billion taka (about 70. 54 million U.S. dollars) on Wednesday from about 5.29 billion taka (about 67.77 million U.S. dollars) on Tuesday.

KUALA LUMPUR -- The Malaysian stock market ended higher here on Wednesday.

The Kuala Lumpur Composite Index (KLCI) was at 1,582.44 up 2.84 points or 0.18 percent, and the Emas was at 10,854.38 up 50.62 points or 0.47 percent.

Turnover declined to 1.89 billion shares valued at 1.78 billion ringgit Malaysia (433.51 million U.S. dollars), compared with 2.25 billion shares valued at 2.11 billion ringgit Malaysia (515.64 million U.S. dollars) on Tuesday.

JAKARTA -- Indonesian shares closed lower by 26.24 points, or 0. 58 percent, to a level of 4,484.24 on Wednesday.

Some 186,430 transactions were booked, involving 4.49 billion shares worth 3.57 trillion rupiah (about 258.46 million U.S. dollars).

BANGKOK -- The Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET) index Wednesday moved up 6.51 points, or 0.47 percent to close at 1,379.12 points.

Some 9.41 billion shares worth 46.23 billion baht (about 1.30 billion U.S. dollars) changed hands.
