Myanmar extends state of emergency period in Kokang region for third time

Xinhua, August 18, 2015 Adjust font size:

Myanmar's parliament on Tuesday passed a proposal to extend a 90-day period of state of emergency, imposed in Kokang region, Shan state-North, to another 90 days for the third time starting on the day.

The proposal was made by President U Thein Sein.

A martial law imposed along with the state of emergency in the region remains effective, according to the parliament.

The 90-day state of emergency was first declared on Feb.17 following heavy fighting on Feb.9 between government forces and Kokang's Myanmar National Democratic Alliance Army (MNDAA).

The state of emergency period was extended for the second time from May 18 to Aug. 17 as fighting continued in the region and the situation has not yet returned to normal. Endi
