Czech Republic witnesses increasing pace of population ageing

Xinhua, August 18, 2015 Adjust font size:

The Czech Republic has witnessed an increase in the aging of its population, the Czech Research Institute for Labor and Social Affairs said Monday.

In 2015, every 25th Czech is over 80 years of age, while it was every 40th citizen 25 years ago.

The aging population will have a rising impact, according to a demographic forecast. Up to 216,700 men and 376,600 women may be aged over 80 in 2025, while the total population number will be about 10.6 million at that time. Every ninth Czech citizen may be over 80 by the mid-21st century.

The increase of people in old age will be the most important demographic change in this century, said experts.

According to Czech government plans for the preparation for population ageing, a sufficient offer of services will have to ensure that the elderly may live independently and stay in their own milieu as long as possible.

The conclusions of a pension commission showed that Czechs are likely to spend roughly one-fourth of their lives retired. Endit
